| 5 Vainqueurs Internationaux pour la CM2006 - Citation :
- The final bout of World Cup qualifiers for the season in Europe was mostly a story of success for Chelsea players.
The one player to make the scoresheet in Wednesday’s games was Eidur Gudjohnsen, finding the net for Iceland’s second goal in a 4-1 win at home to Malta. The Iceland captain has scored in six out of the seven internationals he has played in the past 12 months.
However it was Iceland’s first win in the qualification stage and they are struggling second from bottom of their group.
Arjen Robben failed to get amongst the four goals that the Netherlands put past Finland in Helsinki but he had a hand in making the second and played the whole game. Mikael Forssell came on for the final quarter-of-an-hour for the Finns.
The win kept the Dutch narrowly in control of their group, one point ahead of the Czech Republic who were at home to Macedonia. Petr Cech conceded the first goal of that game but the Czechs emphatically turned the tide, running out 6-1 winners.
Damien Duff played the full 90 minutes for the Republic of Ireland way up in the Faroe Islands, Ireland winning thanks to two second-half goals. They go top although Switzerland are just one point behind with a game in hand. William Gallas’ France (who did not play) also have a game in hand and are three points back.
Tiago came on for the final minute of Portugal’s 1-0 away win in Estonia. Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira were unavailable. The Portuguese are comfortable at the top of their group.
Following his red card at the weekend, Robert Huth was absent for Germany’s final warm-up game before the Confederation Cup tournament begins next week. The match was a 2-2 draw against Russia. Alexey Smertin did not play, nor did Mateja Kezman in Serbia's exhibition match against Italy in Canada.
Over in South America, Hernán Crespo scored two first-half goals in Argentina's 3-1 home win over Brazil. The victory guarantees his nation a place in the World Cup Finals. Crespo will rested for the upcoming Confederations Cup.
